Day 2

  1. Issue the equipment.
  2. Give a demo of the basic functions of the cameras, if necessary. This can be done for the whole class or individually. Often, students pick up their knowledge looking over your shoulder as you demonstrate to individuals. Don’t be surprised if they understand almost immediately (like I was).
  3. Demonstrate how to take care of the cameras so they don’t get lost or broken, film ruined, etc.
  4. Give some pointers on exposure, use of flash, composition, and editing as necessary. Try not to get too hung up on this, since too much info may intimidate the students if they are new to this. Monitor their reactions and questions and decide on the right amount of instruction here.
  5. Impress on the students that they need to start working immediately, even if the deadline seems distant. They may need to reshoot if they find that they can’t work with what they have. Instilling the idea of reshooting and editing from the beginning is a good idea. Students can just crank something out because photographing can be so easy. They need to take time to analyze their shots to see if they show what they want them to show. The photo also has to be gripping enough to sustain their interest in writing about it.
  6. Now let them fly…
